Chapter 1. Moving Houses, A History Lesson
This chapter provides the reader with a brief history of the complicated and delicate process of moving buildings. From a 1799 engraving depicting a team of horses moving a small timber framed structure in Philadelphia, the relocation of the Pelham Hotel in Boston in 1869, the nation’s first apartment building, to the relocation of the town of Hibbing, Minnesota in 1929, the reader gains respect for this unique and fascinating trade.

This chapter investigates reasons for and against moving a house and outlines the various decisions that must be made when contemplating a house move. The reader is given a series of issues to consider when taking on this monumental task.
Chapter 3. The Moving Process, What's Involved
How is a structural mover selected and what is involved when the process of moving a house commences? This chapter focuses on the beginning of the moving process and explains permitting requirements, responsibilities of the homeowner, the travel route and the new site.
Chapter 4. Historic Preservation and the Federal Government's Role in Funding
How does one decide between renovation, rehabilitation, restoration and reconstruction? What role does the Federal Government play in historic preservation and funding? These and many other questions are discussed and answered to help the reader understand the National Register, as well as tax incentives for historic preservation and certified rehabilitation.
Chapter 5. Historic House Moving
The process of historic preservation through relocation is discussed with several examples showing the importance of selecting the proper new site. The reader also gains insight into the selection the new foundation, considerations prior to moving and preparations for the move.
Chapter 6. Choosing a Method for Moving
There are three methods of transportation for houses; in one piece, totally disassembled and partially disassembled. This chapter discusses each in detail and gives the reader an in-depth look at what is involved in making this decision.
Chapter 7. The Structural Mover's Role
This chapter describes in detail the physical moving of a house. The chapter covers the tools the structural mover uses to perform his task and the variables taken into account when preparing the structure, lifting it and transporting it to the new site.
Chapter 8. The Economics of House Moving
Determining the cost of a move is discussed with several detailed examples which depict the most common move types. A simple table is provided for homeowners to calculate an estimate for moving their house.
Chapter 9. A Case Study--Strawberry Banke
This chapter provides a case study of the Joshua Wentworth House at Strawbery Banke, an outdoor museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The case study details the historic and architectural significance of the house, the process of finding funding for the move, challenges to the project and lessons learned.
Chapter 10. Moving by Example
The reader is provided with six examples of moves across the country which depict the challenges and obstacles others have overcome to move houses. The chapter helps to tie the entire moving process together through a documented series of project photographs for each move.
